No, AI is not replacing software engineers as a profession. The evidence is far more specific. AI is replacing certain tasks (boilerplate, support tickets, simple refactors), squeezing certain roles (junior coders doing routine work), and shifting the job toward judgment, design, and verification. Most engineers will keep their jobs. The shape of the job will change.
The clearest piece of evidence comes from Anthropic's Economic Index, which analyzed millions of real Claude conversations. Across all uses, AI is 57 percent augmentation and 43 percent automation. People are mostly using it as a smarter colleague, not as a replacement worker.
For software development specifically, Anthropic's April 2025 study of 500,000 coding interactions found that computer and mathematical roles make up 37.2 percent of Claude conversations, even though they are only 3.4 percent of the US workforce. Engineers are heavy AI users, but they are using AI to accelerate their work, not to disappear from it.
The big shift in 2025 and 2026 is the rise of agentic tools (Claude Code, Cursor agents, Codex, Devin). These shift the balance toward automation. Yes, the junior squeeze is real and measurable. The most important nuance in the paper: the steepest declines are in roles where AI tends to automate, not augment. Junior developers are not doomed by AI in general. They are doomed by being placed in roles where AI replaces the whole task instead of helping a human do it.

- Pick augmentation roles, not automation roles. A junior backend engineer at a small product team will be told to "use AI to ship faster" (an augmentation role and a survivable one). A junior outsourcing role writing CRUD endpoints from a spec will be replaced by an AI agent and a senior reviewer (an automation role and a vulnerable one).
- Get to the second rung fast. The data is clear that workers above the junior tier are not seeing the same drop. Your goal in the first 18 to 24 months is to stop being the person whose job AI can do alone.
- Prefer companies that ship a product to companies that bill by the hour. Outsourcing shops are exposed because their value depends on labor arbitrage, which AI compresses. Product companies need engineers who own outcomes.
Why Experienced Devs Got Slower With AI
Short answer
A July 2025 randomized study by METR found that experienced open source developers using modern AI tools (Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5 and 3.7 Sonnet) took 19 percent LONGER to finish real tasks in their own large codebases. They predicted a 24 percent speedup. Even after the study, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20 percent. AI usage and AI productivity are not the same thing.
The full paper, Measuring the Impact of Early-2025 AI on Experienced Open-Source Developer Productivity by Becker, Rush, Barnes, and Rein at METR, is the most cited piece of skeptical AI productivity research right now. The study used 16 senior developers, 246 real issues from their own repositories (averaging more than 22,000 GitHub stars), and paid participants $150 per hour. The most uncomfortable finding in the paper is the gap between perception and reality. Economics experts and ML researchers polled before the study predicted speedups of 39 and 38 percent. Reality was a 19 percent slowdown. Both expert groups were 100 percent wrong, in the same direction, by the same magnitude. The study authors write: "This gap between perception and reality is striking."
The study has fair caveats. It tested a small number of people, on a specific kind of task (real bug fixes in their own codebase), with specific AI versions from early 2025. It does not say AI tools are useless. It says AI tools speed up some work and slow down other work, and your intuition about which is which is unreliable.
The contradiction with GitHub's research
GitHub's own earlier productivity study of 95 developers found Copilot users finished a fresh HTTP server task 55 percent faster than developers without Copilot. Both findings can be true at the same time. AI is faster at greenfield throwaway code with no existing context. AI is slower (for skilled developers) at navigating real systems with deep context.
The practical takeaway
Use AI where it shines (boilerplate, exploration, unfamiliar APIs, throwaway scripts). Be skeptical of it where the METR study shows it underperforms (deep work in your own large codebase, where you already know the right answer faster than you can prompt for it). What AI Is Good At (and Where It Fails)

AI is excellent at first drafts, boilerplate, code translation, test scaffolding, and explaining unfamiliar code. It is unreliable at deep system reasoning, security sensitive code, ambiguous business logic, and anything where "almost right" is worse than "slightly slower." The headline contradiction of 2025 and 2026 is right there in those numbers: adoption keeps rising while trust keeps falling. Engineers are using AI because they have to, not because it is reliable. That is the gap your career strategy has to live in.

- Deep system thinking. Understanding distributed systems, databases, caching, queues, observability. Days 1 to 30: become a real AI user
